José Vicente Peraza, a miner by profession, was born about 1790 and died before 1899. He married JOSEFA CAÑEDO VERDUGO who was born in 1803 in Sinaloa Leyva, daughter of MAXIMO CAÑEDO Y CORVERA & LUZ VERDUGO. Josefa died a widow on April 26, 1899 in San José de Gracia, when she was 96 years old of anemia cerebral. Her death was reported by Francisco E. Peña. Francisco Peraza Cañedo was born cerca 1833 in San José de Gracia, son of Vicente Peraza and Josefa Cañedo. As a young man Francisco travelled north to California, participating in the 1848 Gold Rush, returning about 1860 to San José de Gracia. Here he met DOLORES MARTINEZ OSORIO 1832-1891, also of San José de Gracia, daughter of JUAN NEPOMUCENO MARTINEZ & ISABEL OSORIO.
Upon returning to San José de Gracia, Peraza Cañedo associated himself with his brother in law, José Manuel Peña Montoya (1828-1891), who was married to his sister Maria Dolores Peraza Cañedo. Peraza and Peña worked the mines of San José de Gracia with great success and for many years were the principal mine owners of the area.
In 1871 his son, Francisco Peraza Martinez was born. Whether the couple married in church is not known, but there doesn’t seem to be any record of a religious marriage. However in 1892 the couple do register their marriage with the local Justice of the Peace, Manuel Aguirre. This was not uncommon, between 1890 and 1893 many presented themselves to the local registry office to register their births and or marriages. Whether this was due to a new civil registry law which had taken effect, or due to the necessity of having the register for legal purposes is not known. Franscico Peraza died between 1892 and 1901, so it could possibly have been in order for his wife and children to legally inherit his properties and goods.
Dolores died on January 1, 1901 in San Jose de Gracia, Sinaloa. Her death, reported by Miguel Tarriba Beltran to the district judge Antonio Aguirre, states that she was by now a widow, inferring that Francisco was already deceased, and that she was a proprietor and that she died of pneumonia, attended by the physician Luis G. de la Torre. She was buried in the local cemetery with her husband Francisco.
