![]() Joseph Scott was born on July 16, 1867 in Penrith, Cumberland County, England, the son of Joseph Scott, also from Cumberland and Mary Donnelly from Wexford, Ireland. He was educated at St. Cuthbert's College, Ushaw, Durham, England and studied law at London University, England. In 1889 he moved to the United States and became Senior Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature at St. Bonaventure's College, Allegany, New York, U.S.A in February 1890. Scott moved to California June 30, 1893 and on June 6, 1898 he married Bertha Lucille Roth Savin (1870-1963), daughter of Adolf Benjamin Roth and Maria Delfina Savin Cota 1843–1933. In 1907 he received his Phd at Santa Clara College, California.
Joseph was a prominent member of Knights of Columbus, acheiving many accolades, and achieving fame for his eloquent and motivating speeches. "He is one of the shining lights in the Knights of Columbus in the State of California and one of the progressive men of the day." San Luis Obispo Daily Telegram, Volume 9, Number 100, 12 June 1909 HONOR CONFERRED UPON JOSEPH SCOTT KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS HONOR JOSEPH SCOTT On May 1912 he was Chairman of Great Britain Overseas Expedition for the Knights of Columbus, Committee on War Activities, and travelled several times to England, Scotland, Ireland and France. SCOTT FILMED AS HE RECEIVES MEDAL Joseph and Berta lived in Los Angeles until their deaths. Joseph died on November 24, 1958 and his wife Berta died five years later on September 10, 1963. Joseph Scott Daughter to Wed Loyola Prof 9. Unnamed Scott was stillborn in 1912. 10. Gabriel Scott was stillborn on September 16, 1914 at Sisters Hospital. His parents Joseph and Bertha, were living at 984 Elden Ave, Los Angeles at the time, and state that they had 10 children, including Gabriel, 7 of whom were living. 11. Stephen Scott was born on August 31, 1915 and died 3 days later on September 2, 1915 at Sisters Hospital in Los Angeles. He died of toxemia from nursing.
