Jose María Hidalgo de los Santos 1801-1881
Jose María Hidalgo Santos was the eldest son of Jose Esteban Hidalgo Jimenez (1770–1867) and María Josefa Benita De los Santos Barrios (1786–1840), and was born about 1801 in Tepic, Mexico, (he was 80 years old when he died in 1881).
Some-time between 1830 and 1835 he and his younger brother Tirso settled in San Antonio and on December 18, 1834 at the church of San Antonio de Padua, José Maria married Maria Antonia Cota León (1815–1867) daughter of Francisco Santiago Cota 1795–1855 and Maria Ygnacia León 1795–.

Like his brothers Tirso and Manuel, José María was involved in mining, cattle ranching, commercial activities, pearl fishing and politics. During the Mexican–American War he and his brother Tirso took part in the defense of the territory of Baja California against the American forces at Mulegé on October 2, 1847 and in La Paz on November 13 of the same year.
José Maria, a carpenter by trade, died of hydropsia (dropsy), on June 21, 1881 in La Paz, Baja California Sur.
Children of José María Hidalgo de los Santos & Maria Antonia Cota León (1815–1867).

Jose de Jesus Adelay was born on December 16, 1835 in San Antonio Pueblo, Baja California, Mexico.
Selmira de Jesus Gregoria was born on February 20, 1837 in San Antonio, Baja California, Mexico and baptized on March 13, 1837 in San Antonio, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Her Godparents were her uncles Don Manuel Hidalgo and Doña Francisca Navarro.
On February 4, 1867 in the house of her Godparents, Don Manuel Hidalgo de los Santos and Francisca Navarro, in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Semira married her first cousin, Juan de Jesus Hidalgo Navarro 1843–1911, son of Tirso Hidalgo de los Santos and Domitila Navarro Castro. The witnesses for the groom were Doroteo Quevedo and Francisca Gracia and for the bride, their mutual uncle Don Manuel Hidalgo de los Santos and his son, cousin to the bridal couple, Dr. Manuel Matias Hidalgo Navarro.
However, perhaps due to the fact that they were first cousins, it appears that only the civil marriage took place. There is no church marriage for the couple and they have no children together. Juan later marries another woman and on June 17, 1931 in La Paz, Baja California Sur , Selmira dies at the grand age of 94 years, and it is stated that she was a spinster.

Maria Rita de los Santos (Josefa) was born on January 20, 1839 in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico and baptized on April 21, 1839 at Nuestra Señora de La Paz, La Paz, Baja California. Her Godparents were her paternal uncle Tirso Hidalgo de los Santos and her grandmother Josefa de los Santos.
Maria Rita never married and died on February 27, 1892 when she was 52 years old. Her death, reported by Felix R. Mendoza Cota, who was married to her niece Francisca Hidalgo Navarro, says that she was the daughter of Jose Maria Hidalgo and Ma. Antonia Cota and that she died on Calle de Oro, Manzana 17, Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico. Both death registers, civil and church, name her as María Josefa but the only child of Jose Maria Hidalgo and Ma. Antonia Cota whose birth fits in and who was actually registered in La Paz was Maria Rita, baptised in 1839. There is no marriage or death for Maria Rita so I believe they are the same person and that she was known as Maria Josefa.
